What's your thinking on Blogmore?

I forget...

Did we ever get to see the stolen rug that tied
the whole room together in the Big Lebowski?

If so, what did it look like?

If not, we should all do an art piece of what
we think it looked like and have our own show.

That could be a cool one, I bet.

Art can be in any media.

I wonder if we could show at the Dahl?

... and this one too

Spin asked me to put this up...

so I don't feel bad about going over her post.

CAPTION ME!

First the Gov, now this...

Read it here

It seems lots of people are trying to distance themselves from HB1215.

The article is about how the Task Force and the legislation process was pretty much a sham.

The pro-life woman who chaired the committee speaks up and says as much.

So we have the Governor who says that the legislators never intended HB1215 to become law (so that's why he signed it??) and the chairperson of the Task Force admitting that she got railroaded by a group of extremist zealots, and by all means the people of SD should get to vote on this.

Right. Let's do vote on it. And while we're at it, let's get those people– who think that kind of nonsense is a good way to run state government – out of here!

For the cause...

Via Myspace, I contacted the woman who made the Napoli cartoon.
She happens to be fantastic and I wanted to share with you our conversation.

Hi Stephanie,

We are working on the main South Dakota grassroots website www.sdhealthyfamilies.com to refer the anti-choice abortion bill that was recently signed into law by our governor, to a vote by the people. There is huge opposition to the law here and we are delighted to be helping fuel the fire.

We are also working on another site (thats not up yet) that will be a bit more cutting edge. That site will be the reciprocal for the larger donations. We were wondering if we could have permission to use your Napoli cartoon on the website. We believe it would help bring both humor and clarity to the situation.

Thanks much for your time (and your cartoon)
Bonny

Dear Bonny,
By all means, please use it! Can you pull it off my web site? It's at www.minimumsecurity.net, in the archives section. If not, let me know what email address I should send a copy to.
Thank you, and I wish you victory in defeating the law!
Best,
Stephanie

You're awesome!
Thank you so much for bringing national attention to the cause and the stupidity of Mr. Napoli and letting us use your cartoon. It made quite an impact on the people of South Dakota. The World Wide Web is finally proving itself to be the best political vehicle Ive ever seen. I cant believe the networking thats gone on since we started this thing.

Keep up the good work; I cant wait to check out your other cartoons.
Thank you, Thank you!
Bonny

Dear Bonny,
I'm so happy that my cartoon has been able to contribute something to your efforts -- it's such an important cause! It's great that the people of South Dakota aren't tolerating this stupid law! It will make a big difference to the entire country if you're able to defeat it...many other states are waiting to see what happens, and will go the way South Dakota goes. Women everywhere are counting on you to stop those who want to control our lives!
I agree about the internet -- it's given us ways to connect and spread information that we've never had before -- it's fantastic!
All the best,
Stephanie

Another (not so funny) joke?

Check this out. Governor Rounds says he was just kidding. An excerpt from a post on Mt. Blogmore entitled
"Rounds on the Radio":

"Near the end of the hour, he answered some of the host’s questions about HB1215, saying that those involved had no intention of this actually being law in SD. It was designed only for the purpose of giving the Supreme Court the opportunity to review Roe v. Wade and, perhaps, return abortion regulation fully to the states. And it will be years before anyone knows if this strategy proves successful. (Unless SD voters say No thanks to the whole thing in November.) "

Unbelievable, huh?

President Bush, First Lady Laura and Dick Cheney were flying on Air Force One. George looked at Laura, chuckled and said, "You know, I could throw a $1,000 bill out of the window right now and make somebody very happy."

Laura shrugged her shoulders and replied, "I could throw ten $100 bills out of the window and make ten people very happy."

Cheney added, "That being the case, I could throw one hundred $10 bills out of the window and make a hundred people very happy."

Hearing their exchange, the pilot rolled his eyes and said to his co-pilot, "Such big-shots back there. Hell, I could throw all of them out of the window and make 56 million people very happy.

What Fun!

If you haven't seen it, you need to. Tomorrow's matinee is your last chance. DO IT!..it is so Shakespeare and so well acted.

Check it out:

This is the longest time I've ever seen a thread continue to develop after it's "dropped out of sight" on Mt. Blogmore.

This woman Rachel rocks.

Here are the last 2 installments:

Beryl: “#208: Pregnancy complications/changes do not differ do to the woman’s desire to be pregnant or not, they exist due to the medical condition of the mother, the fetus or both.”
You don’t say. I never claimed that being forced to gestate upped the chances of complications during pregnancy. My point was that the pro-foetus league routinely just ignores the fact that there is a woman involved, whose body goes through enormous changes as a result of pregnancy: I, like many pro-choicers, am sick of women being sidelined in the debate about abortion. We hear endlessly from the pro-foetus gang about how the z/e/f has fingerprints/a heartbeat/a face/a talent for writing absurdly sentimental poems/whatever - and never a word about how the woman gets varicose veins and hemorroids, stretch-marks, the butterfly mask of pregnancy, etc etc etc. The anti-abortion crowd needs to grow up, acknowledge that pregnancy is a big deal, and learn to respect women enough to allow them to decide for themselves whether or not to go through it.

And a pregnancy doesn’t have to be medically complicated to be extremely unpleasant both physically and psychologically. The bottom line is that it is morally indefensible to force women to gestate if they don’t want to.

238.

“The bottom line is that it is morally indefensible to force women to gestate if they don’t want to.”

Exactly, Rachael.

I would add that it is just as morally reprehensible to force women to reproduce against their will as it is to force them to have sex if they don’t want to.

It begs the old question doesn’t it Rachel:

“Which letter of the word “no” do these boys not understand?”

Did anyone catch Skogg's drift?

Back there when we were talking about dates and times, she hinted at a chilling scenario. What IS going to happen at sixty six minutes and six seconds after six a.m (7:06) on June 6th, 2006?

666 666!

That would be Antichrist day. Of course, as the Skleeve notes, it happens every 100 years, right?

Quote of the day

Abortion Ban Killed in Mississippi

Here's an article

Abortion Ban Killed in Mississippi

Late last night the proposed Mississippi abortion ban was killed when the Republican Chair of the Senate's Public Health and Welfare committee, Alan Nunnelee, refused to sign the House bill. The House chair, Democrat Steve Holland, called Nunnelee's bluff by essentially agreeing to all provisions of the ban. Holland told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger "we brought them a ban on abortion." Nunnelee said the bill was so complicated that it would require lawyers to review it. "It's a very complex conference report, and I can't make a judgement on that," said Nunnelee. The end result is that the abortion ban is dead this legislative session in Mississippi.

"For the past two weeks the legislative galleries have been filled with abortion rights supporters. During this time we outnumbered the pro-lifers 4-1," said Susan Hill, president of the National Women's Health Organization, which runs the Jackson Women's Health Organization, the only remaining abortion clinic in Mississippi. This outcome shows the right to life movement is quite divided in what to do about abortion bans. The National Right to Life Committee has indicated such bans are premature, and the White House appears not to want more bans in this election year.

How good are Wild Idea Buffalo Hotdogs?

Well that took a while...

I've just finished Stephen King's Dark Tower septet.
If anyone wants the short version, give me a call.

I'm glad he got that out of his system, I guess.

But....let's put it this way....it's no "Green Mile."

There are two really funny parts though, worth the
price of admission if for no other reason than that
they make you laugh out loud after a reeeeeeeaally
long, agonizing series of depressing images.

Strangely, a third attempt at humor kind of falls on it's face.
I'm not sure whether this is intentional on King's part
or if he was just running out of gas.

Anyway, good job Stephen and to all who can stick with him
through all seven books (for a while there I was thinking he
might actually write 19 of them).

For my part, I'm going back to non-fiction for a while.

Please critique

I just posted this on Blogmore:

Ok, Beryl, I had to read your post #142 over a few times to figure out that perhaps only the top part of it was specifically addressed to me.

That “mosquito thing” really threw me, because I didn’t remember saying anything of the kind. But then I found it in one of DL Emerick’s posts, so ok, I get your point.

Sometimes these threads get really confusing and frustrating. You have to sort through so many tangent posts to follow the course of a conversation. I get exhausted trying to knit it all together sometimes, and also distracted by people who think the way to have an intelligent conversation is to throw idiotic, off topic, hysterical stink bombs.

Weary as I am of this debate, I do have a response to your request, and will deliver it as my final installment to this long thread.

You ask:

“Can pro-choicers defend abortion without the “its only a ball of tissue” argument backing up their whole house of cards? Anyone care to try?”

The answer for me is, yes I can.

First, I’ll ask if you have fully digested and are basically in agreement with the article I posted above?

“When does Life Begin”

If so, you will see that science and philosophy alone are not in full agreement with the idea that a human person is present at the monent of fertilization, nor for that matter are they in agreement as to when precisely that moment occurs.

Personhood is a developmental procees that takes time, not an instaneous point in time.

The range of time in which a zygote develops into a person varies with the scientific view you hold, and yes there are arguments on both sides of each view.

Even so, let’s recap, these views, and their corresponding time frames are as follows:

Metabolic view = 20-22 hours.
Genetic view = 12-24 hours.
Embroyological View = 12 days.
Neurological view 24-27 weeks.
Ecological/Technological view = viability or 25 weeks (with artificial life support).

My personal opinion, is that the Neurological and Ecological/Technological view make the most sense because they use the same medical measurements to determine life doctors do to determine death – the presence of a coherent nervous system complete with a thalmus in the brain capable of producing the type of brain waves that indicate characterictc human brain activity (i.e. rational thought, versus random neurological reflex activity) and lungs that can breathe air.

Many people use “living wills” instruct doctors to pull the plug on them if they reach this condition. Many use the words “I don’t want to just lie there in a vegitative state.” Very few argue that this is murder or suicide.

Ok. so much for that part of the overview. Let’s move on.

Certainly the intrusion of unwanted male genetic material via rape or incest is enough for a woman to want to be rid of an unwanted zygote, and this would be consistent with the protection from these crimes that she enjoys under existing law.

If it is illegal for a man to rape a woman or to have sex with his daughter, presumably these laws are there to protect society from the undesireable consequences of those actions, pregnancy being one of them. Most societies have taboos agains incest to prevent the long range damage to society due to inbreeding.

Rape victims need continued legal protection from the consequences their assailant has foisted upon her. Even Bill Napoli, in his very small way, admits to this being only just and fair, although his idea of there being such a thing as a “simple rape” baffles the mind.

Now, there is the health of the mother. Even HB1215 allows for abortions if the life of the fetus threatens the life of the mother, so let’s take that as a given starting point and look backwards into the general health of both the mother and the fetus.

I believe women should be allowed to choose whether they wish to carry a child to term if her physiology is such that pregnancy and childbirth will severly endanger her health. Further, I believe she should be able to decide whether she wishes to give birth to an obviously deformed or otherwised handicapped child. I’m thinking of Huntington’s disease, Down’s Syndrome, FASDs etc. Those are private decisions, I believe, not something we want to legislate.

And finally, there is the notion of volition. We should be able to decide whether we want to reproduce or not, depending on our life circumstances.

A woman who is taking birth control to avoid becoming precgnant should not be penalized because existing birth control methods are not 100% effective.

If a woman doesn’t want to be pregnant and bear a child I don’t think her society and it’s legal system should force her to do so. I do believe that she should be obliged to make her decision promptly, however. The earlier the better, as far as I’m concerned, up to the end of the 2nd trimester when indeed, there is undeniably a lot more at stake than there is at the “moment of conception” (whenever that is).

So have at it Beryl, there’s my answer.
