West Side Story

So, here it is - the midterm of the fourth quarter of my first year back in the classroom. It is spring, and it is raining (almost snowing) here in the hills and it has been for three solid days. The ground loves, I love it...the students, however, are less than thrilled. However, it is keeping them inside and in class. What's more is that my drama classes have been studying WSS for three weeks now. This great American musical has lead to discussions of social class, racial tension, immigration, love, hate, war, gangs, and music - everything that would make The Bard proud. We are even studying the score - thank goodness for Leonard Bernstein! My kids are taking the test over the entire unit right now while the soundtrack plays softly in the background.

Here is where this gets fun. Exciting "West Side Story" trivia!
1. Who directed and choreographed both the Broadway musical and the film version?
2. Who starred as Maria in the film, but did not sing the role of Maria?
3. Which actress in "West Side Story" has been the only woman to have won all four major awards - Tony, Emmy, Grammy and Oscar?
4. What classic piece of literature is "West Side Story" based? And what is the most recognizable difference between its main character at the end?
5. Who wrote the lyrics for the songs in "West Side Story"? HINT: He went on to write many Tony award winning musicals on his own, such as "A Little Night Music" and "Sweeny Todd".

*Extra Credit: What famous retail company used a series of "West Side Story" dance scenes to help sell their products in 2000 and 2001?

OKAY - no cheating, have fun, and good luck. The correct answers will be posted on Monday, April 25, 2005!

I have to say, that without research, I have no idea what any of the answers are, so I'm going to consider myself out, but I did want to interject and say YAY for the first post of the Eekz variety. Glad to see you hadn't left us.

Well, Spinfly - you managed to get quite a few correct, including the ones you remembered on your own. The extra credit is somewhat, half right. You have the corporation correct.
