Ellsworth on the ropes.
Early news from Sioux Falls
is that EAFB is on the base closure list.
Attaboy John Thune.
Way to take care of West River SD,
the people who got you elected!

Ok, I watched the special report this morning and things looked pretty bleak. Here is what I have heard however;
There is an official list, but that doesn’t mean that Ellsworth will close for sure.
If you go to www.cnn.com/2005/US/05/13/base.closings.list.ap/index.html you can see the list. They are planning to close 20 bases nation wide, and if you look at that list you will see it has many more than 20 locations on it. These are just sites “recommended” for closure.
The official list will be sent to the president on the 8th of September. The president has until September 23 to approve or reject the list without making changes; if approved, it goes to Congress for a vote.
So nothing is final, and just because we are on the list doesn’t mean that we are closing for sure.
Now my thoughts for the record (Thune issues aside). I think that the base is good for our economy. Not to mention that it is the 3rd largest employer in the state. I know that there are alternative plans for the base, but none of them could offer that kind of revenue. Not to say that I support the military efforts or the mistakes our government has made lately forcing the closures in the first place. But being the mother of a small child and choosing this spave as my spave to raise her, I have to take the stability of our area into consideration. Plus, I really like that guy Ellsworth on Deadwood.
Right you are Spinfly. But it's going to be pretty tough to get off the list once you're on it. These are the things Daschle had more power to do than Thune
Have you heard the rumors about Ups and Fed ex?
or what about the possibility of a international airport?
Well - according to Mr. Knowles Jr. it is all a conspiracy so Mr. Thune can "rally" at the last minute this fall, "convince" Mr. Bush that it should stay open, and the "two of them" will look "good"...and South Dakota will fall in love with them all over again....PUKE!
Yeah, Eeks, that's called doing a "Karl Mundt". He used to do such things routinely with ag bills that looked like they might not pass, then at the last minute he'd step in and save the day. It was all a pre-orchestrated hype. This might go like that, but you have to wonder if the people we're dealing with here are really that smart. Especially if 2 democrats stand to get just as much credit as Thune if politics comes into play (Stephanie and Tim). I'm a little skeptical of that theory, but we'll see, huh?
I am impressed Ms. Spin, you did your research...good job!
I really like the idea of the military's exit and a Fed Ex/UPS entrance (I wonder if there is any meat in that rumor). On the other hand, here's an interesting read http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4650611.
Spinfly has entered politics, BIGTIME!
And so, in his way, has Flick the Fly.
And the world will be better for for it.
I do so dearly love my children.
Chop and Nate, now is the time to rise
up and kick some Conservative asses!
We're counting on you!
(BECAUSE WE ARE OLD)

Owl
I'm with you Polyman, if Kerry were president
(or Gore, who actually won the election) we would have a different Secretary of Defense. And if Tom
D. were still there with a Democratic administration, the word "Ellsworth" would never have come within 10 miles of the closure list.
(I know, I know... and if wishes were horses, beggars would ride, huh?)
There are a lot of great people who came here because of the base, and stayed. Tom Franklin, for example, and John Knight Sr. (Butch's dad). We will indeed have to hope we can create something new.
But that place has brought a lot of good people here and carried a lot of goodwill to other places on our behalf. It may seem like just 5500 or so jobs (which is a lot) but its actually been 50 or more years of that many jobs, and hundreds of thousands of people who have touched our lives and brought the outside world in. I'll bet at least a third of the Black Hills jazz audience is from the base for example.
It's a big part of our culture that will perhaps not easily be replaced.
