Many things going on in the hills. My darling daughter is starting kindergarten this week, and our fellow blogger Chop is moving out. [aaron] got a job in RC and is moving from deadwood and into my house. Large changes at work along with these changes in my personal life have caused me to stop and reflect.

I'm very happy right now with my life, but having to face the fact that time goes by, and there's no stopping it. Realizing that theres no stopping the growing up, and that little kids get older every day. It will only be a matter of time before she's facing similar changes in her own life.

With out the changes life would be boring, I just seems that right now so many things are changing all at once. It's extremely exciting but at the same time somewhat terrifying.

So here is to all the exciting new stuff to come! This life and these experiences wouldn't be any fun with out people I love in it.

The Great Seal Rescue....

Markie and Dick went for a walk on the Beach....

And then Dick showed me a picture of a beached baby seal(well not a baby, but little). I wanted to see it so Kabe and I marched up the beach to where he was laying... I wasn't prepared for the sadness.

he looked so cute but at the same time he was very very sad. Dick had heard from a group of people who had been watching him that he had been there for 2 days trying to work his way down the beach.

The people he talked to said they had called the authority's and they had told them just to let him be. If he was strong enough to make it to water he would live but if not then it was his time to die.

Kabe and I took the pictures i couldnt help but feel awful about hit... his giant eyes were staring up at us almost saying "why are you just standing there taking pictures and not doing anything to help."

Kabe pulled me away insisting that we let nature take its course... we walked back to the group and went on with our day. But the thought of the helpless seal never left my mind, and i spoke to everyone in the group about the poor guy. Everyone else insisted that we just leave him be. Everyone except Dick. The entire day we would secretly tell each other ideas we had about how to save him and get him back to the water he so desperately needed to survive.

When we were there earlier in the day it was low tide, i convinced the group that we should go down and check on him at high tide and see if he had gotten himself far enough down to get washed back out to sea. So a group of us marched down the beach to where he was lying and sure enough he was still there, breathing harder than ever, but he did manage to lift his head and give out a grunt... everyone was ready to head back and i decided to wait and watch he tide roll in a bit more. and i noticed Dick go up to where the beach met the ridge and pull out a long stick. He walked over to the seal, I think his plan was to try and roll him into the water, but supprisingly when dick started to walk towards him he lifted his head and let out a growl.

Dick got him turned towards the ocean and "herded" into the waves.

He was pretty pissed off by the stick, but i think he also knew what was going on...

Dick stopped a couple times to let him rest. he slowly backed further and further into the waves until the started to crash around him, and then he started to go into them on his own.

he eventually swam under the waves and out to sea on his own... dick threw down the stick and i ran up to him, hugged him and told him he was my hero. the thing is, i know it was best to let nature take its course, and from what i can see we didn't do anything wrong, we just helped him decided that he wanted to live, and now what happens to him out there in the water is natures deal. At least we did something.

I may have figured out why he's so dramatic. Notice the color is red...which means he's on the DARK SIDE...

Here's a short story. All quotes are paraphrased.

There once was a young prosecutor who was randomly assigned a case. It was a trespassing case where a young man said he was going to a college campus to protest legal abortion. He carefully orchestrated it so he would be arrested when he got on campus. You see, the campus had a policy where outside groups needed to give two weeks notice before they come on campus.

That policy had been shared with the protestor and his friends. The school even told them, "In two weeks, you are welcome to set up a booth outside of our student center, the busiest part of campus." But that's not what the protestor wanted to do. He wanted to be arrested.

So he picked a random day and called the school yet again. "If I come to the school, will I get arrested?" "Yes, Mr. Protestor, you will." So he showed up in a big van with a few friends. There was ONE police officer there to meet them. The officer was standing next to ONE administrator. "Sir, you have been told that you can't be here. If you go onto campus with those signs, you will be arrested." "I know."

Later, the Protestor was asked if the people he rode with would be causing trouble. "No, I'm the fall guy this time."

So the file reaches the prosecutor's desk. At first glance, it appeared to be a slam dunk case. It still is. However, the Prosecutor, her boss, the counsel for the school, and other individuals who work in the system came to the same conclusion:

The criminal justice system in South Dakota is not a giant bowl of money for outside interests to pluck from. The system should not be used as a forum for individuals to use in promoting their own opinions at the expense of taxpayers. If you are purposefully arrested so you can gain media attention, the State may take the position that we don't want to assist you in your endeavor.

So the case was dismissed. Contrary to a ridiculous title in the Rapid City Journal, the Protestor was not cleared of any charges. The State chose not to proceed against him. The State could refile the charges at anytime, so nobody was "cleared" of anything. Also, in dismissing the case, the Prosecutor used the words "in the best interest of justice," which are words used in almost all dismissals. It's a coverall phrase that applies to uncooperative witnesses as well as the State not choosing to prosecute for a variety of reasons.

The State hoped the case would go away, but the Protestor did get his wish of press coverage. The Journal posted an article and citizens of the city posted comments. One citizen called the Prosecutor incompetent. The Prosecutor was offended for about 1 minute, until she realized the citizen spelled the word incorrectly.

And that's your story for the day.

The reports are that the surgery was successful and that it wasn't cancer
but rather a congenital disorder that was bound to cause this problem
sooner or later.

Time will tell whether Tim will recover fully, but people usually do recover
from this kind of surgery.

Meanwhile, it's way too early to worry about the political ramifications.

In fact, all the political buzz is basically unnecessary gossip.

In practical terms, it takes 60 votes to get something done in the Senate,
not just 51. So Tim should just rest easy and get better. There is a new
breath of fresh air blowing in both houses of Congress and a decidedly
bipartisan sprit that has emerged over the last 2 years.

Just what Tim wanted.

If he never does anything else, (even as I hope he will)
he's already helped make the world better.

I wish him peace, love and continuing health for the holidays.

And the same to all of you Spavesters.

THE REVIEW!

First of all, the controller is no longer the conventional thumb sticks and buttons that has been the standard of late, but a single handed unit that resembles a remote control. The thing about this controller though is that it is completely motion sensitive; in a tennis game, you swing your controller as though it were a racket. In bowling, you actually do the same motions as though you were throwing a bowling ball.

Now that's all well and good for sports games, but what about the first person shooter games or anything that requires actual movement of your character? Well, it also has an attachment that has been dubbed the Nunchuk. You plug it into the bottom of the normal controller and you then have a method of movement. The Nunchuk is also completely motion sensitive, making a boxing game much more interesting.

The reason I mention these sports concepts is that the console came with Wii Sports, which includes Bowling, Tennis, Baseball, Golf and Boxing. All are really fun to play and all of them can be played multi player (provided you have the correct hardware, of course).

Aside from the gaming end of things, the Wii can also do a number of other amazing things. You can connect to the internet and use an Opera browser to do just about anything you can on a normal computer. You can upload pictures to the console and edit them with a paint program integrated into the system and a number of other things.

My last words of praise bring me back to the gaming end of things. First of all, the Wii is reverse compatible with Gamecube games, secondly, it features a program called Virtual Console, with which you can download and play games from the NES, SNES, N64, Genesis and Turbographix, all for $5-$10 each.

It's an amazing system and totally worth the 16 hour wait at Walmart. I'm extremely pleased to see that Nintendo (basically the originator of gaming) will not drop off the face of the planet.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go put some ice on my tennis arm.
